Filipino photographer Manex Sungahid from Manila was named as the winner of Philippines National Award, part of world’s biggest photography competition, the Sony World Photography Awards.
Sungahid’s winning image “Dog City” was chosen as the single best photograph taken by a Filipino photographer entered into any of the awards’ ten Open categories.
Sungahid, a solutions architect and passionate amateur photographer, currently based in Pasig City, has won a Sony A7R II with SEL2470Z. In addition, the winning image will be part of the 2016 Sony World Photography Awards exhibition at Somerset House, London from 22nd April – 8th May and will be published in the annual Sony World Photography Awards book. The exhibition will also include the winning and shortlisted images of Professional, Open and Youth competitions alongside the first major European exhibition of the artistic duo and fine art photographers RongRong & inri (China/Japan), recipients of the Outstanding Contribution to Photography prize at the awards.
Talking about his winning image, Sungahid comments: “The image portrays one of the contingents at the Ati-Atihan Festival held in Kalibo, Aklan every 3rd week January. It is the longest and creasiest fest in Philippines and during this weeklong festival, a whole day street parade takes over the whole city. There are many colourful dresses and faces covered in paint with the theme of the contingents. They are all dancing in the rhythms of the drums and other musical instruments.”
Talking about his win, Sungahid continues: “No words can express how lucky, grateful and overwhelmed I am. Simply because this photo was submitted during the final hour of the competition, I feel very excited to see my image featured in different forms and outlets. I am so proud to represent my country with this amazing achievement. I am so excited to see London for the first time and meet the best photographers in the world. This is definitely one of the unforgettable moments of my life!”
